Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale

Artist. Daughter of lawyer, Matthew Fortescue Brickdale. She was educated at Crystal Palace School of Art and entered the Royal Academy in 1897. Her earliest work was in illustration, later exhibiting large historical paintings often exploring romantic themes. Fortesque Brickdale also illustrated literary texts such as Tennyson's Poems (1905) and designed stain-glass windows. She became the first female member of the Institute of Painters in Oils in 1902, but ceased to work in 1938 following a stroke.
