Information

This woodblock was originally engraved for an illustration to be used in the 'Dalziels' Bible Gallery' (pub. 1881). However, it was not included in the original book. It was ultimately published in 1894 in 'Art Pictures from the Old Testament,' a new version of the 'Bible Gallery' with an accompanying text and additional illustrations. The index to the book cites Leviticus xxiii, 33-43 as the basis for this design. On the reverse of the block itself is written 'Leviticus 23 - 39' suggesting that the source is the line: 'also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days.' However, the design does not match the text very closely and it is unclear if it was the inspiration for the composition.
