Mortuary Design - Gravestone and Plot1887 – 1898 Accession number: 1978P533.1 Pencil on heavy cream paper. Width: 251 mm Height: 355 mm InformationThis probably is not a design for his own plot, since Burne-Jones wanted to be cremated. It is, however, for the same area in St Margaret's churchyard, Rottingdean, where his and his wife's ashes were interred - the east side. The upper sketch is a highly ornamented design with stone floral trenches added. Beneath the design, in his hand are arrows and dimensions, 'about 6 ft - 6 ins over'. The design below shows a cross-section of the plot in three layers. The first is labelled 'slab' with arrows extended for its width. The middle section also has similar arrows, 'supporting stones at ends'. Near this section is an arrow with the caption 'narrow space for flowers on each side'. The final section is marked 'Earth', to its right 'cobbles', beneath that, 'slats', in the centre, 'section' and to the far right, 'paving'.
