Harbours of EnglandBy J M W Turner, Thomas Lupton, John Ruskin 1856 Accession number: 1978P190 Bound volume containing engravings and illustrative text. Width: 280 mm Height: 384 mm Information'Harbours of England' was 'the fulfilment by Ruskin, so far as existing materials rendered it possible, of a work designed by Turner' (Introduction to 'The Works of Ruskin,' E. Cooke and A. Wedderburn, eds., London, 190). At Turner's death twelve plates had been prepared by the artist and his engraver, Mr Lupton, for a volume intended to depict the ports and harbours of England. Ruskin was asked to write a text to accompany the illustrations so that the book could be published. Only seven of Turner's plates were included in the final volume which was published in 1856. Photographs of a selection of the engravings have been chosen to accompany this entry, in order to give an idea of the type of illustrations contained in the book.
