Information

A page from the facsimile edition of Burne-Jones' Flower Book, one of 38 watercolour designs reproduced by Henri Piazza et Cie, for the Fine Art Society, London in 1905. 'White Garden' is also known as the white arrach (Atriplex hortensis), sometimes known as 'mountain spinach' or 'garden orache'. Burne-Jones creates a wind-swept garden of lillies in one of the images that comprise 'Sponsa di Libano' (Song of Lebanon), also called 'Song of Solomon'. In particular, it is the image entitled 'Awake O North Wind', on which two magnificent drawings are based, one in Birmingham's collection c. 1873; and c.1871, Private Collection [Sotheby's Belgravia, 1 July 1975, Lot 29]). There is also a large-scale painting in oil that depicts the same scene (Walker Art Gallery, 1891).
