Information

A page from the facsimile edition of Burne-Jones' Flower Book, one of 38 watercolour designs reproduced by Henri Piazza et Cie, for the Fine Art Society, London in 1905. 'Helen's Tears' refers to the elecampane flower (Inula helenium). Burne-Jones did create a similar scene of Helen with Troy burning around her, which was used in the 'Story of Troy' polyptych, although that scene is compositionally different from this 'Flower Book' image. 'Helen Amid the Burning Flames of Troy' is in Birmingham's collection (c.1871).
