Information

To compliment his early interest in the poetry of Chaucer, Burne-Jones sought out other works of medieval literature and was familiar with the famous allegory of courtly love, the 'Roman de la Rose', written in the 13th century by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, which served as the basis for Chaucer's 'Romaunt of the Rose'. For the dining room at Rounton Grange, near Northallerton, Yorkshire, William Morris and Burne-Jones devised an elaborate scheme of decoration based on incidents from the 'Romaunt'.
