Sketchbook - Female Head Study1875 – 1879 Accession number: 1952P4.20 Pencil on paper. Width: 177 mm Height: 263 mm InformationHead study of a woman, very likely Georgiana Burne-Jones, the artist's wife, as the features are strikingly similar to portraits of her, both by Burne-Jones himself, and her brother-in-law, Edward Poynter. This may be a head study for 'The Annunciation' (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight); some scholars believe the Virgin's face is modelled on Georgiana (see 'Edward Burne-Jones: Victorian Artist-Dreamer', pages 240-241). The dates of 'The Annunciation' correspond with the dates of this sketchbook, so it is plausible to make such an identification.
