Information

John Ruskin's commissioned Burne-Jones to paint the subject in 1883. The study depicts scenes of chaos and an earthquake as Proserpine is carried off by Pluto while her maids flee in terror. A popular subject in Renaissance art and it is surprising that Burne-Jones hadn't depicted it until the early 1880's.
