Two Tracings of female Figures after Lawrence and Gainsborough1858 Accession number: 1927P401 Pencil on tracing paper. Width: 190 mm Height: 133 mm InformationAccording to Betty Elzea the figure on the left is from an engraving by R. J. Lane (1827) after a chalk drawing by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). She has also identified the figures on the right as the two girls from Thomas Gainsborough's (1727-1788) unfinished picture 'The Painter's Daughters with a Cat.' Shesuggests that Sandys made the tracing from an engraving after the original as the figures are reversed and details of the sitters' poses and costumes have been altered ('Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 152). Formerly attributed to Ford Madox Brown.
