Jerome Peat identified this sketch as a copy in reverse of a composition by J. B. Weenix (1621-1663) entitled 'Cavalier Seated' which was reproduced in the 'Art Union' (vol. 10, 1848, p. 246) (see Betty Elzea, ' Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 148).
