Betty Elzea sugests that this sketch may have been copied from an engraving ('Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 152). This seems highly likely as the Birmingham collection holds a large number of drawings by Sandys copied from prints and engravings in the 1850s. Formerly attributed to Ford Madox Brown.
