Information

Betty Elzea has identified these two tracings as copies of illustrations in Henry Shaw's 'Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages' (pub. 1843) (Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 142). The left tracing is a portrait of Constantia, Duchess of Lancaster. The right tracing is a copy of an illustration first used in Camille Bonnard's 'Costume Historique' (pub. 1829-1830). It's use in Shaw's book indicates that nineteenth century authors often used earlier publications as sources.
