Portrait - Tracings of Constancia, Duchess of Lancaster, and Cimabue copied from Shaw's Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages1850 – 1859 Accession number: 1927P398 Pencil on tracing paper. Width: 170 mm Height: 191 mm InformationBetty Elzea has identified these two tracings as copies of illustrations in Henry Shaw's 'Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages' (pub. 1843) (Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue RaisonnĂ©, p. 142). The left tracing is a portrait of Constantia, Duchess of Lancaster. The right tracing is a copy of an illustration first used in Camille Bonnard's 'Costume Historique' (pub. 1829-1830). It's use in Shaw's book indicates that nineteenth century authors often used earlier publications as sources.
