Information

These studies appear to be drawings of tomb effigies. It seems most likely that they were copied from a nineteenth-century sourcebook of effigies, possibly Charles Stothard's 'Monumental Effigies of Great Britain' (first pub 1817) which included multiple views of effigies to aid artists in their quest for accurate costume. It is also possible that as Betty Elzea suggests they may have been copied from J. S. Cotman's 'Engravings of ... Selpulchral Brasses in Norfolk, 1814-1819, which 'was no doubt in the collection of James Bulwer [Sandy's patron] at Hunworth Rectory' (Betty Elzea, 'Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 152).
