Information

According to both Betty Elzea and Ray Watkinson these drawings are copies of two embroideries from Hardwick Hall illustrated in the article 'English Medieval Embroidery' by the Rev. C. Hartshorne and published in 'The Archaelogical Journal' (December 1847, pp. 290-291) ('Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 139; an unpublished letter from Watkinson to the curatorial department in the object file). Elzea surmises that Sandys was given access to this article by his patron the Rev. James Bulwer who had a large library and may well have subscribed to the journal.
