Width: 1830 mm Height: 1190 mm InformationThe eleventh in a series of twelve panels, based on 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' from William Morris's epic poem, 'The Earthly Paradise', commissioned by George Howard (later the 9th Earl of Carlisle) in the late 1860s for his newly-built home in No 1 Palace Green, Kensington. The full title of the panel is, 'Psyche receiving the casket back from Proserpine: Psyche, brought back to the upper regions by Charon, having opened the casket in the hope that the beauty of it contained might become hers, lies unconscious on the ground: Cupid, warned by the Phoenix of Psyche's danger, flies to her rescue.'
