Sir Galipot bearing the holy Gruel1855 – 1859 Accession number: 1922P20 Pencil on paper. Width: 58 mm Height: 137 mm InformationThe sombre mood of much of Solomon's work may suggest he was a man of brooding and melancholic temperament. However, reminiscences of those who knew him often recall his ebullient wit and charm: he 'convulsed his friends with laughter by his strange and weird imagination'. In this drawing, he pokes fun at one of the central themes in Pre-Raphaelite art, the Quest for the Holy Grail. Solomon seems to have made many humorous drawings and caricatures like this one, either for his own amusement or to entertain his friends, but they rarely survive.
