This undated work is likely to have been made on one of Ruskin's numerous visits to the alps made in the 1840s. There are a number of works in a similar style which date from this period, notably 'Mountain Rock and Alpine Rose' (pencil watercolour and white bodycolour, 1844) in the collection of the Ruskin Galleries, Bembridge School, Isle of Wight.
