Deverell's brother, Spencer, was the model for the character of Orlando. His sister, Margaret, posed for the character of Rosalind. After Deverell's death, his close friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), retouched the painting; 'to get rid of what I thought unpleasant in Celia's face.'
