Information

Based on a scene from Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'. The painting depicts the mock marriage between the characters Rosalind and Orlando. Deverell's brother, Spencer, was the model for the character of Orlando. His sister, Margaret, posed for the character of Rosalind. After Deverell's death, his close friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), retouched the painting; 'to get rid of what I thought unpleasant in Celia's face.'
