Twilight, Pity and Death1889 Accession number: 1908P305 Pencil, blue and red chalk on paper. Width: 358 mm Height: 396 mm InformationThis work is one of many drawings of heads in profile, each personifying an abstract idea, which Solomon produced in the latter part of his career. This facial type - with a straight, classical brow and nose, a strong chin and a full, sensual mouth - represents a personal ideal of beauty which appears again and again in Solomon's work. Here, Twilight gazes up at the darkening sky and Pity weeps, while the armoured figure of Death closes his eyes in withdrawn and brooding contemplation.
