Information

Proof of the wood engraving for Manoli, engraved by Joseph Swain. According to Elzea (p. 214), the design illustrated a poem by W. M. W. Call entitled 'Manoli, a Moldo-Wallachian Legend' and was published in the Cornhill Magazine, vol. 6, September 1862, p. 346. A note on the old mount of this illustration reads: 'Mr Smith (& Elder) has the drawing', probably referring to George Murray Smith, principal partner publishing The Cornhill Magazine (see Elzea, p. 215) .
