Information

An almost finished design for the wood engraving illustrating George Wither's poem 'Life' Journey' in Robert Aris Willmott's anthology 'Sacred Poetry' (1863, p. 66). The poem is an allegory likeing 'the poet'd passage through life to the exploratory wanderings of a child' (Betty Elzea, 'Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 205). In Sandys's illustration a boy, investigating a bird's nest, has fallen out of a tree but is helped by his father.
