During his academic training in Belguim Brown learnt to draw his models first nude and then clothed to gain the correct pose for his final painting. This method of working was used across the continent in the nineteenth century and devrived from Reniassance art practices. This unusual study shows both stages of the process. It is a study for the central female figure sat in front of the fountain in Brown's painting 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney).LM
