Information

This is a study for the left hand of the figure of Robert Burns (1759-1796). He is depicted, wearing a tartan sash in an oil study for the triptych 'The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry,' now at the Ashmolean, Oxford. Brown did not complete the wings of the triptych but made the central panel into 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). LM
