Wycliffe Reading his Translation of the Bible - Study of Drapery for Chaucer1847 Accession number: 1906P731 Black chalk on paper. Width: 217 mm Height: 350 mm InformationThis is a drapery study for Brown's painting 'Wycliffe reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt, in the Presence of Chaucer and Gower' (1848, oil on canvas, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford). The fact that this figure has no head and no hands suggests that Brown was using a lay figure. There are many entries in his diary which record the vast amount of time he spent carefully arranging fabric on a dummy in preparation for drapery studies. LM
