Information

As the inscription on this drawing suggests this is a study of the bust of Alexander Pope (1688-1744) by Louis François Roubilliac (1695-1762) at the British Museum. Pope was one of the poets Brown included in the wings of the proposed triptych 'The Seeds and Fruits of English Poetry' which later became 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). In the oil sketch, now at The Ashmolean, he stands between the figures of Byron and Burns with his head lowered and crowned with a laurel wreath.LM
