Thackeray's Barry Lyndon - The intercepted Letters1878 – 1879 Accession number: 1906P658 Pen and black ink touched with white bodycolour, on thick card. Width: 158 mm Height: 198 mm InformationThis drawing by Millais shows William Thackeray's character, Barry Lyndon, opening his wife's letters. Such an act allowed Lyndon to 'become intimate with her character in a hundred ways, and obtain a power over her by which I was not slow to profit'. The image is highly finished and was probably dated later for inclusion in the Grosvenor Gallery exhibition in 1886.
