The subject illustrates Keats' poem 'Isabella' or 'The Pot of Basil', derived from a story by Boccaccio.One of five studies in Birmingham's collection for the painting 'Lorenzo and Isabella' in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in 1849. A related compositional sketch is in the British Museum.
