These studies were for an etching to illustrate a poem entitled 'Ruth' appearing in Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood (etchings by the Junior Etching Club), 1858:And her hat, with shady brim,Made her tressy forehead dim; - Thus she stood amid the stooksPraising God with sweetest looks. The etching appeared as plate 27 in the volume. Another sketch for the same subject is reproduced in J. G. Millais' The Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais (vol. 1, p. 327).
