Information

These sketches are preparation for a design Millais made to accompany Christina Rossetti's poem 'Maude Clare'. The wood-engraving, which is represented in the British Museum, was executed by Joseph Swain and appeared in 'Once a Week' on 5 November, 1859. The relevant lines of the poem are as follows:Take my share of a fickle heart,Mine of a paltry love:Take it, or leave it, as you will,I wash my hands thereof.
