This drawing of a young girl is a study that was later used in Millais' preparatory design for Tennyson's 'The Grandmother's Apology', also in Birmingham's collection (1906P574). The poem, along with the final wood-engraving by the Dalziel Brothers, was published in the periodical 'Once a Week' on 16 July, 1859.
