Chaucer at the Court of Edward III - Nude Studies for Squire and Courtier talking Gower1848 Accession number: 1906P782 Pencil on paper. Width: 269 mm Height: 160 mm InformationThese studies were made after Brown restarted work on 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney) following the completion of 'Wycliffe reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt in the Presence of Chaucer and Gower' (1848, oil on canvas, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford). The full length figure is for the squire courting the lady on the far left of the composition. The figure on the right is for the courtier talking Gower (see 'The Exhibition of Work and other Paintings, 1865, p. 4). BMAG also holds a later drapery study for the squire's legs (1906P786) and hand studies for the courtier (1906P49). LM
