Chaucer at the Court of Edward III - Drapery Study for the Chamberlain1847 Accession number: 1906P734 Black chalk on paper. Width: 128 mm Height: 158 mm InformationThis is a drapery study for Brown's large painting 'Chaucer at the Court of Edward III' (1851, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). It is a study for the elderly, bearded man sitting on the far left of the composition between the man wearing a hood and the ill-tempered courtier. Although he is depicted in a different costume in the final version the pose closely matches that of the same figure in an early study also in the collection (1906P766). Brown's diary entry for 26 September 1847 may well relate to this drawing: 'Finished the drawing of the Hood & a drawing of the cloak for one of the men next to him, "Chamberlain" (Virginia Surtees, ed., 'The Diary of Ford Madox Brown,' p. 7).LM
