Information
A slightly smaller and less detailed version of a drawing (dated 1850) in the Tate Gallery, apparently relating to a painting projected but never executed. The extremely precise and angular drawing (carried out in ink over a pencil outline which would be rubbed out as the artist went along) is typical of the early Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood group style. As always with Millais, who was an accomplished draughtsman turning his hand to a deliberately naïve manner, there is a slight element of humorous self-parody, seen here in the exaggeratedly nervous couple on the extreme right.
