Sketch of Effie Ruskin by a window at Doune Castle, with portraits of Sir James Simpson (1811-70) / Parodies of Old Masters1853 Accession number: 1906P602 Pen and brown ink on paper. Width: 234 mm Height: 188 mm InformationOn 2 July 1853 Millais, together with his brother William and Effie Ruskin, visited Doune Castle. John Ruskin was not present (as he had sprained his ankle) but he wrote in a letter to his father the following day of how Millais had been struck with admiration at the castle of Doune and was 'determined to paint Effie at one of its windows'. The drawing on this sheet is a sketch for the proposed, but never executed, painting. See also British Museum Collection. On the reverse of the sheet are three caricatures of Old Masters drawn for the amusement of Millais' friends.
