Information

This is one of a number of tracings from medieval manuscripts in the Birmingham collection which Sandys seems to have made in the 1850s. The exact manuscript that he copied has not been identified but it is likely to have been one of those held in the British Museum in the nineteenth century but now in the British Library.

Provenance

Almost certainly to have been acquired by Charles Fairfax Murray from the artist, or from the sale of the contents of the Sandys family home after the death of Sandys' mother in September 1883 (Elzea).
