Mary Magdalene at the Door of Simon the Pharisee - Compositional Study1858 Accession number: 1904P276 Brown pen and ink with wash over pencil on paper. Width: 184 mm Height: 235 mm InformationFairfax Murray had claimed that this work was a later one than the finished pen drawing. Surtees, however (vol. 1, p. 63), claims that this is an early work. More recently Christopher Newall has pointed out that this drawing stands on its own and was then re-worked as the finished composition in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Mary Magdalene may well be based on Fanny Cornforth.
