Information

This is probably a very early profile study of Maria Zambaco, with whom Burne-Jones became involved romantically in June 1868. Burne-Jones first met Zambaco in the Autumn of 1866, when he was commissioned by her mother, Euphrosyne Ionides Cassavetti, to paint something for which her daughter modelled. Burne-Jones made several studies of Zambaco, and in 1867 produced 'Cupid Delivering Psyche' (watercolour, London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham Public Libraries, Cecil French Bequest, on loan to Leighton House, Kensington), with Zambaco as Psyche.
