The original watercolourwas painted in 1871 (now in the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University) and was presented to painter Marie Spartali on her marriage to William J Stillman. A second version was produced in 1873, now in a Private Collection, which is attributed to Burne-Jones, but letters in the Harry R Ransom Research Center at the University of Austin, Texas, reveal this to be primarily done by Charles Fairfax Murray on Burne-Jones's request.
