Information
Dyce was a leader of the High Church movement and deeply religious. His paintings of the 1840s were much influenced by the German Nazarene School, members of which he met in Italy. Later he identified himself with the aims of the Pre-Raphaelites.This painting belongs to a group of Dyce's small oils depicting biblical figures in a detailed landscape setting. The New Testament subject comes from John 4: 1-42. Seated by a well in Samaria, Jesus converses with a local woman, in itself a gesture of reconciliation between the Jews and the Samaritans, who were long-term enemies. While the woman seeks water as a simple necessity of life, Jesus speaks of the living (flowing water) as a sign of eternal life from God. Aberdeen Art Gallery holds a two related studies for figure of the woman and for the figure of Christ. The subject comes from the New Testament. Seated by a well in Samaria, Jesus talks with a local woman. In itself this represents a reconciliation between the Jews and the Samaritans, who were long-term enemies. The woman seeks water to drink, Jesus speaks of the flowing water as a sign on eternal life from God.
