Dalziels' Bible Gallery - Abraham and the three Angels1862 Accession number: 2006.1040.4 Engraved boxwood block. Width: 135 mm Height: 176 mm Depth: 23 mm InformationThis woodblock was originally engraved for an illustration to be used in the 'Dalziels' Bible Gallery' (pub. 1881). However, it was not included in the original book. It was ultimately published in 1894 in 'Art Pictures from the Old Testament,' a new version of the 'Bible Gallery' with an accompanying text and additional illustrations. Solomon's design is based on Genesis xviii, 1-16. In this passage Abraham is visited by three angels. He prepares a meal for them and they tell him that his wife Sarah, though elderly, will give birth to a son. The design on the woodblock shows Abraham giving directions to the three angels at the end of their visit.
