Hope trampling on Despair1864 – 1866 Accession number: 1979P209 Pencil on tracing paper. Width: 176 mm Height: 278 mm InformationThis design for Hope or Spes does not alter from the mid-1860s, and that includes the various media used by Burne-Jones. He omits the wings and halo, as well as the trampled figure in both the 1872 watercolour (Private collection) and 1896 oil painting (Boston Museum of Fine Arts). The figure remains the same with these few alterations as well as the length of the woman's hair. This design was also used in St Edburg Church, Bicester, Oxfordshire.
