King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid - Study for Cophetua1883 – 1884 Accession number: 1972P74 Pencil on cream-toned paper. Width: 181 mm Height: 272 mm InformationOne of five study drawings in Birmingham's collection for the 1884 oil painting 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid' now in the collections of Tate. Birmingham's collection also holds the fully worked up colour cartoon for this subject. In this presumably early conception of Cophetua's figure, the cloak differs from that finally adopted, as well as the object the king holds. Here, instead of a crown, a hood or piece of folded drapery is substituted.
