Sketchbook with Studies for the Perseus Series, Romaut of the Rose, Cupid's Hunting Fields1875 Accession number: 1952P5 Pencil on paper, twenty-two drawings in bound volume. Width: 199 mm Height: 265 mm Depth: 35 mm InformationIn the original decorative scheme for the 'Perseus' series, Burne-Jones had envisaged the Court of Phineus as forming the penultimate scene, as the last of the four carved panels over a doorcase and preceding 'The Baleful Head'. Some splendid male nude studies for this scene are to be found in this sketchbook, but no cartoon was ever begun. The sketchbook also contains studies for 'Atlas Turned to Stone', 'The Rock of Doom', and 'The Doom Fulfilled' as well as male nude studies for 'The Romaunt of the Rose'. These drawings are typical of Burne-Jones's use of a fine but soft pencil, in which he set himself high standards of finish.
