Information
The sitter of this drawing has not been satisfactorily identified. There had been a suggestion that it was May Morris but this has since been disputed (see correspondence in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery archive file). This was one of at least four works by Rossetti in the possession of Joseph Toynbee by 1879; his daughter, Grace Coleridge Toynbee, was the donor's mother, having married Percy Frankland, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham.
- Presented by Edward P. Frankland, in memory of his mother, 1946.
