Information

From a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris''The Earthly Paradise'.This preliminary sketch was later taken up by a follower of Burne-Jones, John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, who uses the identical composition in his 1883 oil, 'Charon and Psyche' (Collection of Lord Lloyd-Webber, catalogue no. 85). It has been previously noted that many of Stanhope's paintings are similar in composition, subject, and models as Burne-Jones.
