Cupid and Psyche - Three Sketches for Psyche abandoned by Cupid1865 Accession number: 1927P648.33 Pencil on cream-toned paper. Bound. Width: 235 mm Height: 108 mm InformationFrom a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris''The Earthly Paradise'.The composition of this sketch differs from the final wood engravings, although Cupid's wings and feet are the same. The composition of the wood engraving is elongated to reveal the dishevelled bed on the left, with Psyche leaning forward with her arms outstretched. The second study of Psyche watching Cupid fly away is very close to the wood engraving, as is her despairing, although the flying figure of Cupid is not observed in the final version.
