Hope standing on Despair1865 – 1866 Accession number: 1927P533 Pen and ink with pencil over watercolour. Width: 87 mm Height: 275 mm InformationThis is one of three designs in Birmingham's collection for stained glass in Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge. Also used by Morris and Co. in a two-light window in Langham, Norfolk in 1898. Compositionally similar to the finished watercolour of 1872, 'Spes' or 'Hope' (now in the Art Gallery, Dunedin) and oil of 1894 (now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts), although the figure of Hope has no wings nor tramples Despair underfoot in the later versions. This cartoon appears in the Morris & Co Windows Book, 1940P604.1, as number 56.
