The Fates - Rough Sketch of the Lovers and Seated Figure1865 – 1866 Accession number: 1927P481 Pencil on cream paper. Width: 240 mm Height: 287 mm InformationOne of a number of studies in Birmingham's collection related to an unrealised composition called 'The Fates', which Burne-Jones worked on in 1865. 'The Fates' (also called 'The Lovers'), depicts the three Fates themselves, seated, looking down upon a male and female couple. These studies show a slightly different and more complicated conception of the unrealised composition of 'The Fates'. The monumental block of the two lovers in the centre foreground with the three Fates arranged in a train above and behind them has now been altered, so that the lovers stand to the right beside a small tree, and on the left is a seated or slumped woman with a small child. In two of these studies, this figure appears to be holding a crutch.
