The Adoration of the Kings Triptych - Study of Head for Infant Christ1860 – 1862 Accession number: 1927P559 Pencil on paper. Width: 110 mm Height: 134 mm InformationThis is an intimate study of a small child, very unlike drawings of children and putti made for works like the 'Troy Triptych'. It is a study for the infant Christ in the second version of the Adoration of the Kings and Annunciation triptych (1860-62), now in the collection of Lord Lloyd-Webber and done in oils. The first version of the triptych dates from 1860, was also executed in oil, and now in Tate, London. The model for the infant in each triptych is markedly different from the other, most notably in the pose of the child, but also in age. Burne-Jones's sensitive treatment of these young models may be due to the fact that he became a father for the first time, in October 1861, when his son Philip was born.
